This summer was the summer of making gold bands! I had a ton a requests to make bands, and you'd think it would just be easier to order the bands
through a catalog instead of make them. However, each band had a feature I couldn't order; I had to carve a wax to their specs. The couple who had me make these bands preferred that I hand carve them out of wax instead of order. I happily obliged!

My client had some garnets, gold, and diamonds from a few rings, and she wanted to combine everything into a new design. I kept the ring and settings low profile because of her work. I love bezels; they are so clean looking and don’t snag. This client also lives in another state, but we used Zoom, mail, and email to get ‘er done! ❤️

My client had a vintage family ring where the center stones were pulled. So, she decided to set an aquamarine and Swiss blue topaz in the middle since both stones held meaning to her. The prongs were in bad shape, so I cut all of the old prongs off and build new ones out of gold wire. I like how this turned out; especially the subtle color contrast between the two blues. 💙

Flexibility in chain repairs is important, if possible. Bulky solder joints are rigid. That rigidity can lead to breakage, and it doesn’t look very pretty. I like a little wiggle in my chain repairs!

I love everything about this custom wedding band! I carved the initial band in wax, and then gave it a hammer and matte finish. It’s a substantial, heavy, and really wide ring!! Custom gets you exactly what you want, and you’ll be happier with the end result. 💛

I'm not sure if you know this about me, but I love vintage restoration work!! This ring came in pretty beat up. The side diamonds were taken out leaving sawblade marks in the gold, and the center prongs were very worn. My client opted for a full restoration and chose a beautiful amethyst to replace the missing center stone. Projects like this make my 💜 sing!

Years ago I did a small batch of rings called "Little Buggers". They were an experiment of sort to just let gold do it's thing when it was melted and hammered. My client wanted an organic look to her
wedding band, so we opted for the three "stone" version of the Little Bugger. It's a fun and playful ring, and I love it it yellow gold.💛

Hi everyone! It feels like time is flying by, and I have some projects I keep forgetting to post. So here is one I did awhile ago. For this ring, my client wanted to mimic his father’s wedding band (left ring). I kept thinking about the jeweler who made his father’s ring and how they got that middle curve just right. Now, I’m here trying to match that curve, and it was a little harder than I thought it would be. 😆
I'd love to see a profile and/or perspective of this. From the top it looks exactly like a ring I made decades ago. It was the first ring I ever created a mold of and sold a bunch of them. I called it the Wave band. Whether is that or not, looks like you did it justice. 🙂

Nice!!!
Do you retip or rebuild a worn prong? That depends on a few factors. For example, this ring needed the prongs to be rebuilt. The main reason is that I couldn't just replace the head (the section that holds the stone) because it was integrated into the ring. So, I cut off the worn section and soldered on new gold wire. The wire is bigger than the prong, so that I have plenty of material to file down and match the original prong size. I repeated this process for the other prongs.

This. Ring. Right. Here!! My client came to me asking me if I could restore her mother's vintage wedding set. Most people would look at this ring and think it was a lost cause. I mean, why bother, just get a new one. This ring meant the world to her, and I'm the type of jeweler that loves vintage jewelry and loves restoring history. This restoration took awhile, but it came together in a way that surprised me a little, ha! She can now wear something that was important to her mom. 💕
I was so happy with the restoration! Brought tears to my eyes to see these rings as I remembered them as a little girl ❤. I can't tell you how much it meant to finally find someone who understood the sentimental value. I had been turned down by other jewelers who said it wasn't worth it. I think it was.

The story behind this ring is ♥️♥️♥️. My client's husband had passed away, and one of their favorite things to do was kayak. I dismantled her original wedding ring and went to work creating a "kayak" ring. I set the marquise east to west to mimic a kayak and then created out of wax a mini kayak paddle. It carries great meaning and memories for her when she wears it. I also got the pleasure of meeting her current partner, and boy are they fun people! They are a beautiful example of how we can honor love from the past and be open to loving again. ♥️🛶♥️

These are super tiny, but mighty, Montana sapphires. I’m making earrings out of wax, but they are too small to hold onto. I attached a wax stick to the back to make wax carving a little easier.

My client decided to switch out her original center stone for a larger stone and set it in a rose gold halo. We kept her original engagement ring mounting and wedding band, but that simple switch in setting styles changed the whole look! 💕Fun story: Her husband came to me years ago to make her engagement ring. Back then I had my studio in the basement of my home. I think of the people who trusted me enough to visit me in that old basement to work on their jewelry with a washer and dryer in the background. The best part is that I still get to see them and work with them years later. I love having those types of relationships. I do sometimes miss doing my laundry while I work though .😂

This vintage ring came to me with two missing pearls and several pearls that were loose. Epoxy was used to hold the pearls in, but a little too much was used (as you can see, it was caked on the underside of the ring). I thought it was best to remove all the pearls, remove the old epoxy, and then reapply a new, thinner layer of epoxy, and tighten the prongs. It cleaned up well and is ready to wear again!!

Waxing the teeniest of prongs! I definitely need some lessons and practice in making prongs, but I gotta start somewhere, make mistakes, and refine and learn from there. Waxing is time consuming, but there is something about the process that I just love.
I think doing it is the way to learn! And you mostly learn from your mistakes. Looks good.
If you have access to someone s laser you can have them laser a 28 gauge 3/8 to1/4 inch long sterling wire on the end of one of your wax pens which will allow you to add intricate detail like small pave’ or shared prongs.
For this custom job, I wax carved a channel band that holds birthstones that represent her family. I tried to replicate the shape as best I could, so that it was a good match to her existing wedding set. She wanted this family ring for years, and I get excited for my clients when they get to wear their visions!

Let’s talk about heads! Heads are basically the part/prongs that hold a stone. When I remove a worn out head I need to make sure that the new one is securely soldered in. If the solder does not attach to the bottom of the head it will pop right off with a good blow. So, I make sure to drill a little well for the bottom of the head to drop into, and then allow the solder to attach to the bottom. If you’ve ever had the head of your ring completely pop off, it’s most likely because the solder did not properly adhere to the bottom of the head.
👍❤ I used to see so many sheared off heads. We used to joke that folks were getting in fistfights while wearing their rings! 😆😆 I also used to solder a piece of wire to the bottom of the head, large enough to just fit the drilled hole. Then, solder it in. Extra security method.

I get the question “What type of stone is this?” a lot! On occasion, I can tell right away, but other times I need to take a stone through a battery of gemological tests to figure it out. I always start out using a refractometer (pictured here). Gems have specific RI numbers that help to identify the species. If I can’t figure it out from the RI number I will take it through an additional 3-4 other tests. This stone needed one more test to confirm that it is a synthetic green spinel! 💚

This family ring was carved in wax, and a combo of new and old stones were added in the open spaces. During the design process, I made several little tweaks here and there to get it just right. There was a lot going on, and stone placement made a huge difference in how this ring balanced out. I think it’s a great juxtaposition of open and closed spaces.

When sizing a wedding set, I prefer to separate the two rings, size them separately, and then solder them back together. Why? Especially, when it is cheaper to size as one ring. Sometimes the two rings are completely different sizes and the sizes need to be corrected. Other times, the tension from going up in size creates a larger gap where the rings are soldered together. Or, the rings are different thicknesses at the bottom. Your ring will look better if time is taken to make sure each ring is cared for individually before soldering them back together. ♥️

Hollow rope chains can be really tricky to repair. They tend to suck up a lot of solder making the repair area stiff. There is also the risk of melting nearby links. I learned a new technique where I remove the broken section and weave gold jump rings in its place. The chain still moves, it looks great, and is way more secure.
Excellent! The re-weaving is tremendously helpful. I used to enjoy doing these, super precise and close work!

I am burnishing and sanding out a seam from a palladium ring sizing here. One word of advice, don’t purchase palladium rings! 😂. Palladium is a terrible metal that is brittle and cracks. It may be part of the platinum family, but it’s just no good. Stick with platinum. I sized this ring only because the store my client bought the ring from won’t size palladium anymore. Sometimes, I’ll take one for the team. 😂

Retipping and stone replacement! The marquise diamond I had to replace wasn’t sitting in its seat very well, so I recut the seat to fit better. I also retipped a couple of prongs. I like to retip in gold wire; it tends to create a stronger repair.

This one is a beautiful mother’s ring made for my aunt. Mother’s rings and family jewelry always have fun twists to them because everybody makes it their own. That ring represents the peeps they love dearly. I’m just waiting for someone to add the family dog or cat birthstone into the mix. 😂 I mean, the animals in our lives are family too!! 🐶♥️🐈

The part of custom design I appreciate the most is the human connection that happens as a part of the process. A couple came in today to pick out diamonds for a pair of earrings, and now I’m sorting through 21 stones to find a good match. That is custom. Educating, talking together through choices and then taking the time to pick out the best for each piece. It’s worth it every time!!

My client wanted to surprise her wife with matching bands to go on either side of their current wedding rings. She wanted the bands to have a vintage feel and a combo of emeralds and diamonds. Instead of wax carving four bands, I wax carved one, had a mold made, and then had four rings cast from the mold. Those bands really dress up the wedding ring, and those emeralds just pop! 💚
